It’s time for “this date in history.” On May 20, 1873, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis were granted a patent for using copper rivets on canvas trousers, specifically on pocket corners to provide strength–when the use of canvas transitioned to denim, this ultimately led to the rise in popularity of blue jeans. Since that time, the Levi’s company alone has sold more than 200 million pairs of jeans. On May 20, 2015, David Letterman stepped down as the host of The Late Show with David Letterman. One of the trailblazers to modern late night talk shows, David Letterman entertained many devoted fans for 33 years. Famous birthdays on this date include singer Cher and actor Jimmy Stewart.
