It’s time for “this date in history.” On June 4, 1982, the Connecticut legislature passed the nation’s first “Lemon Law.” The bill was introduced by South Windsor’s own John J. Woodcock III and it was designed to address seriously defective new automobiles which were popularly referred to as “lemons.” The Act provided legal protections for automobile consumers who were seeking repairs for consistently faulty problems with their new vehicle. State Representative Woodcock would eventually focus his energies on passing a lemon law for used cars as well. Connecticut would set a trend with this law and eventually led to all 50 states and the District of Columbia each having their own lemon laws. On June 4, 1983, the song “Every Breath You Take” was the number 1 hit on Billboard’s Top 100 for its 8th straight week and one year later on this date, American musician Bruce Springsteen released “Born in the U.S.A.” which would become one of his most iconic tunes. Thanks for listening to this date in history.
